Saturday, April 23rd 2011 is our 2nd Annual Midnight Run.
This event is organized in conjunction with the First presbyterian Church in Katonah, NY under the direction of Mr. bart Tyler. Mr. Tyler has been running the Midnight Runs to feed the homeless for over 25 years.
Each Midnight Run distributes about 150 brown bag meals, each bags contains a hefty sanwhich of ham, cheese, turkey, or tuna (for vegitarian meals, just cheese is fin), a bottle of water, a piece of fruit, and a hard boiled egg.
Families who would like to help make and donate lunches, might consider colored eggs, it would be a nice touch - our run is the eve before Easter. Interested volunteers should contact Mrs. Hurson or Mrs. Muir. Email webmaster@somerstroop228.com if ou need their contact information.
Preparation eve, (6:00pm at the Amawalk Firehouse) the Scouts will also prepare a vat of chicken soup (50 gallons). The soup is rich with 10lbs of carrots, 10lbs of onions, three cooked shredded chickens, 10lbs of celery. All food is washed, cut, and prepared by the Scouts with adult supervision,
The homeless we met last year requested sleeping bags and backpacks, if you have any you no longer use, please consider donating them.
The scouts sort the donated clothes, coats, and shoes by size, load the church van and head out around 10:30pm, then return around 2:00am.
The van always returns empty and the Scouts are filled with energy as they tell stories of the great gratitude from the recipients. The homeless often share their stories with the Scouts while they are served soup and coffee.
This is truly an enlightening experience for all who participate.
Once agin, interested volunteers should contact Mrs. Hurson or Mrs. Muir.
